Accommodations in Milan
Milan is the capital of the region of Lombardía and without a doubt a fashion capital. It is a rich and cosmopolitan city, and after undergoing each of its numerous conquests, has always reconstructed itself with gusto. Founded by the Celts in 600 BC, it was conquered by the Romans, the Ostrogoths, the Lombardos, devastated by Federico Barbarroja I in 1162, conquered by France and later by Spain until, in the 20th century, it became the center of Italian history during the Universal Exhibition of 1906.The most iconic square in Milan is without a doubt that which houses its imposing cathedral, the Duomo, the greatest and most complex example of Gothic architecture in Italy. Carved entirely out of marble, its construction lasted five centuries. Its highest point, the famous Madonnina, affords excellent views of Milan. In the same square are the Royal Palace and the elegant Emanuel II Galleria, the vaulted commercial gallery that connects with the Theater Museum de la Escala - an emblematic destination for opera-lovers - and the 16th century Marine Palace. Continuing along Via Guiseppe Verdi, you arrive at the Museum of the Risorgimento and the famous Pinacoteca de Brera with its more than six hundred masterpieces. Or, from la Escala, take the Route Manzoni, and can visit the Poldi Pezzoli Museum and the Church of San Babila.
West of the Duomo Square (Piazza del Duomo) lies the medieval heart of Milan: the Mercanti square (Piazza Mercanti) with the Palazzo della Ragione, the Loggia degli Osii, the Palazzo delle Scuole Palatine, and the Provincial Office of State. The plaza is one of the Cordusio where the elegant Via Meravigli ends and in which resides the Meravigli Gallery. Further ahead is the Church of Santa Maria de Gracia, a jewel of the Renaissance that contains Leonardo da Vincis masterpiece, The Last Supper. And halfway along is the street that leads to the Basilica of San Ambrosio and the University, with its beautiful patios.
Castillo Sforza is one of the symbols of Milan and, in spite of having faced numerous adversities and having being saved from sure destruction, it today houses the Museum of Historical Art which contains that famous unfinished work by Michelangelo, the Pietá Rondanini - the Museum of Applied Arts and the Archaeological Museum.
